Windshield Replacement vs Repair: What You Need to Know
Not every windshield chip or crack requires a full replacement. In many cases, a professional repair can restore the glass safely and save you time and money. Here’s how to decide which option is right for your vehicle.
When a Windshield Repair Is Usually Enough
- The damage is a small chip or crack less than about 6 inches long
- The damage is not in the driver’s direct line of sight
- There are only one or two chips
- The outer layer of glass is affected, but the inner layer is intact
A quality windshield repair uses a specialized resin that fills the damaged area, restores strength, and greatly reduces the chance of the crack spreading. Repairs are typically faster and less expensive than a full replacement.
When Replacement Is the Safer Choice
- The crack is longer than 6 inches or is spreading
- There are multiple chips or cracks
- The damage is in the driver’s critical viewing area
- The chip or crack goes through both layers of glass
- The windshield has been previously repaired in the same area
- Your vehicle requires ADAS calibration (many newer cars)
Repair vs Replacement Considerations
A damaged windshield is a structural part of your vehicle. When damage is too severe, repair vs replacement may be required.
In such cases, a complete replacement with OEM-quality glass is the best solution.
ADAS Calibration After Replacement
Many modern vehicles have cameras and sensors mounted on the windshield. Following a replacement, technicians re-calibrate these systems to ensure lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control function properly. At A-Team Glass, we perform in-shop ADAS calibration when required.
